How to Unlock Key Early Tools, Magic, and Hellkitten Form
Quick route: follow Orlock's Wine Scheme to Viktor for your starter tools, complete A Bridge Too Far, and continue the Crest Garden story through The Dinner Party. After the dinner, check your mail each night for Luna's Come Visit! letter, which begins The Magic of Crops. Moonlight Peaks loves hiding one useful system behind one more letter or cutscene. If you have crossed the same purple stretch of town three times, check the journal and map sparkles before hunting for a secret pickup.
This is a scoped early-game list, not every ability in the game. It covers the tools and powers that solve the first major chores: mining, obstacle clearing, watering, fishing, critter catching, cheaper tilling, and faster travel. Tested version: Steam PC release build v1.1.38. Prices, resource costs, and default controls can change by patch or platform, so follow the live shop card or button prompt if your game shows a different value.
Early Unlock Requirements
| Tool, spell, or form | How to unlock | Cost, ingredients, and resource use | Opening constraint and practical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rusty Axe, Rusty Pickaxe, Rusty Scythe, Rusty Shovel, Rusty Watering Can, Broken Wand | Begin Orlock's Wine Scheme, then follow Orlock's prompt to visit Viktor in the crypt on your farm. | Free; no ingredients. The Axe, Pickaxe, Scythe, and Shovel use 0.75 energy per successful action. The Watering Can and Broken Wand use 0 energy. | The tools appear in the tool wheel during the opening route. The Broken Wand cannot cast spells until The Magic of Crops. |
| Fishing Rod | Enter the beach beside the east side of the path running north from town toward Luna's farm. Noel's event begins Outfish the Fisherman. | No purchase or ingredients; 4 energy per cast. Catch three different fish species and report to Noel to finish the quest and receive 250 coins. | Look for event sparkles on the map. Noel gives you the rod for the contest. Cast beside a visible fish shadow; the starter rod cannot handle large fish. |
| Net | Complete A Bridge Too Far, enter Misty Shores, and meet Death in the Ambrosia Graveyard. Return to town on later nights until Death's Soul Blob event plays. | Free; no ingredients; 4 energy per swing. The Net has a 20% miss chance in v1.1.38. | It catches bugs and Soul Blobs. Walk close before swinging, because even a miss spends energy in this build. |
| Copper Pickaxe | Complete A Bridge Too Far to open the Cave of Echoes, then buy the upgrade from Ridge at Howling Hammer: Shop → I want to buy something → third tab. | 1,000 coins, 1 Rusty Pickaxe, and 3 Copper Bars. Three bars require 12 Copper Ore and 3 Charcoal at a Furnace. Uses 0.75 energy per swing. | Howling Hammer opens Monday-Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight. The Copper Pickaxe breaks rocks faster and is required for Iron Ore deposits. |
| Copper Axe | Use Ridge's tool-upgrade tab after opening the Cave of Echoes. | 1,000 coins, 1 Rusty Axe, and 3 Copper Bars. Uses 0.75 energy per swing. | Its higher damage cuts trees and logs in fewer swings, reducing the total energy spent on blocked farm paths. |
| Copper Watering Can | Use Ridge's tool-upgrade tab after opening the Cave of Echoes. | 1,000 coins, 1 Rusty Watering Can, and 3 Copper Bars. Uses 0 energy. | It uses water more slowly than the rusty can. It handles ordinary watering, while magical crops still need the Aquaflux effect. |
| Fixed Wand | Complete The Dinner Party, read Luna's Come Visit! letter, and visit her farm to begin The Magic of Crops. Take the Broken Wand to Webb of Wonders, where the Sabrina and Noel scene repairs it. | Free; no ingredients; 0 energy. | Webb of Wonders must be open. Return to Luna after the repair. This starter wand is not the later Witch's Wand. |
| Aquaflux I | Luna teaches it during The Magic of Crops after the wand is repaired. | Free; no ingredients; 1 mana per cast. | Gesture: Up → Right → Down → Up → Left → Down. It summons one watering can and covers up to 16 crops. Your real watering can must contain water. Magical crops require its magical watering effect even when it rains. |
| Refilliarmus | After spellcasting unlocks, buy it from Sabrina at Webb of Wonders. | 2,000 coins; no ingredients; 0 mana. | Gesture: Right → Down → Left → Right. It instantly refills the watering can, which makes Aquaflux easier to use away from a water source. |
| Arborascend I | After spellcasting unlocks, buy it from Sabrina at Webb of Wonders. It becomes a required progression spell during The Mysterious Bay. | 1,200 coins; no ingredients. Its listed normal cost is 2 mana, but have at least 3 mana ready for the story cast in v1.1.38. | Gesture: Down → Up → Right → Left → Up. Cast beside the fallen log at the small waterfall west of the stairs to Luna's seed cart in Moonlit Pines. The quest log points toward the mermaid story, but the target is not in the Howling Marshes. |
| Hellkitten form | Complete the story chain A Bridge Too Far, Tension in Crest Garden, A Croak and a Crest, and The Dinner Party. The form and form wheel unlock when The Dinner Party ends. | No purchase or ingredients. Transforming shows no mana or energy charge in v1.1.38; tilling in this form uses less energy than the Rusty Shovel's 0.75 per tile. | Hellkitten form moves faster, tills bare soil, and lets you speak with creatures. It is a transformation, not the named three-eyed Hellkitten companion living at your farm. |
How to Activate Tools, Spells, and Forms
- Tools: on keyboard and mouse, the defaults are E for the tool wheel and R or left-click for Use. An Xbox-style controller uses RB for the tool wheel and the displayed face button for Use. On Switch, hold R for the tool wheel and use the displayed Y prompt.
- Spells: equip the Fixed Wand, then enter the rune directions on the casting circle. The D-pad is the cleanest choice on Switch; a controller stick or mouse also works. If the pattern has gone coffin-dark in your memory, open the Almanac's spell page and select the spell to view its rune.
- Hellkitten: open the form wheel instead of the tool wheel. The defaults are Q on keyboard, LB on an Xbox-style controller, and L on Switch. Select Hellkitten, then use the displayed action over bare farm soil to till. Change back when you need an item or tool that the form cannot use.
Upgrade note: a Copper upgrade consumes the matching Rusty tool; it does not create a second copy. The Iron upgrade for each covered tool requires its Copper version and 3 Iron Bars, plus the coin price shown at Ridge's shop. Aquaflux II follows a different path: it costs 8,000 coins and requires the later Witch's Wand, so the Fixed Wand cannot use it just because the spell appears in Sabrina's stock.
If the Unlock Does Not Trigger
- Finish the active named quest in your journal. These systems are tied to story events rather than loose pickups.
- Check the map for sparkles before entering a region. They mark many available events, though some cutscenes can still begin without the icon.
- Sleep to save the night, then read every new letter before leaving the farm. Luna's letter is the gate for The Magic of Crops.
- Re-enter the needed area on a later night: Noel's beach for fishing, town after meeting Death for the Net, Luna's farm for magic, or Ambrosia Mansion for the dinner.
- If Hellkitten is absent, confirm that The Dinner Party is marked complete and reopen the form wheel with Q, LB, or L. If the slot is still missing, save by sleeping and restart the game before repeating the quest route.
Bat form is outside this early route, so no bat unlock requirement is listed here. Keep following the main story when its empty form-circle starts taunting you; the early transformation covered in this section is Hellkitten, and it already gives your kinder little vampire a useful boost for farm work and moonlit travel.
