Why Refuel Stops Working and How to Fix It

Tested on The Loopler version 1.0.2. You know the scene: the tiny car is flying, the refill animation appears, and the tank still heads toward empty. Then durability starts paying the bill, and the number-go-up machine becomes a very fast paperweight. Do not buy three more fuel gates yet. Low Refuel Efficiency, a trigger that fires too rarely, a missed area effect, an empty-tank card with no charges, and an old-version bug can look alike during a fast round. They need different fixes.

Check These Six Readouts First

Pause at the next pit stop and inspect the build before replacing anything. In the Garage, hover the stat tooltips and record Fuel Tank and Refuel Efficiency. Fuel Tank is capacity; Refuel Efficiency controls the strength of refills that use that stat. During the next round, note the current speed when the problem begins. Then open Inspect Track, follow the travel direction, and list the gates in the order the car crosses them.

CheckWhat to look forWhy it matters
Fuel TankCapacity and whether it reaches zero before the next triggerMore capacity buys time, but it does not strengthen a weak refill.
Refuel EfficiencyWhether the value is low or droppingA trigger can work correctly while adding too little fuel.
Current speedThe speed when the failure startsThis separates a high-speed bug or explicit area-timing problem from an ordinary weak refill.
Gate orderWhich refill, brake, boost, or area effect comes firstThe tank may empty before the car reaches a later gate.
Card chargesCharges remaining and charges granted per repairOn Emptied cards stop helping after their charges are spent.
DurabilityValue before and after the tank reaches zeroAn empty tank makes durability absorb the loss; repairing it does not fix the fuel plan.

Quick trigger check: loop completed → On Loop; normal Fuel or Refuel Gate crossed → gate refill; tank reaches zero → On Emptied. Watch one safe loop at normal game speed and note which of those events actually raises the tank.

Refuel Failure Decision Tree

  1. The refill fires, but the tank gains less than the build needs. This is the low-efficiency branch. Check Refuel Efficiency first. Improve that stat with an effect or garage part whose current tooltip says it does so. Fuel Tank capacity can delay the empty point, but capacity alone will not make each refill stronger. Reserve Tank is a useful fallback because it belongs to the empty-tank branch rather than the normal refill race.
  2. The refill works, but it does not fire often enough. This is a trigger-frequency problem. An On Loop refill waits for a completed circuit. A normal Fuel or Refuel Gate activates when crossed in version 1.0.2. If the tank empties before the next loop or gate pass, increase capacity, improve the dependable refill, or keep one backup gate. Do not blame efficiency when the needed trigger never happened.
  3. An effect with an area marker is being missed. First read its tooltip and confirm that it really uses an area. Ordinary Fuel and Refuel Gates are pass triggers in version 1.0.2; do not apply the old playtest fuel-zone behavior to them. For a gate that explicitly uses an area, inspect the corrected marker and watch whether the car enters the marked section. If speed or gate order causes the miss, try Brake → area effect → Boost, or replace that effect with an On Loop, on-pass, or On Emptied refill.
  4. The tank reaches zero without the expected rescue. Confirm that the card says On Emptied and inspect its charges. These cards trigger when the tank empties and have a limited number of charges per repair. If the charges are gone, repair to replenish them or add a normal refill. Reserve Tank is emergency recovery; it does not restore durability already lost.
  5. The tooltip, charges, and trigger order all look correct. Check the version. Update to 1.0.2 before treating strange high-speed behavior as a mechanic. Test one unchanged loop and record speed, Refuel Efficiency, charge count, and the last gate crossed before the tank emptied.

Fix the Run at the Right Stage

Early run: secure one repeatable fuel source before drafting luxury score pieces. Since version 1.0.1, the first pit stop always offers a fuel or brake gate when the build has no fuel source. If the offered gate is fuel, take it when the tank cannot survive to the next dependable trigger. If the offer is brake, use it when slowing the car helps an explicit area effect or buys enough time to reach another trigger. Repair early if empty-tank damage has already eaten the durability buffer.

Mid-run: compare two rounds, not one lucky lap. If an On Loop refill activates every circuit, keeps the tank above empty, and remains strong enough through the round, it can replace a redundant fuel gate. Remove one extra gate and spend that slot on score, boost, ghost, or another part of the real engine. If the tank falls lower each round, keep the backup while improving Refuel Efficiency or Fuel Tank. One dependable tap is elegant; one hopeful tap is how the pit crew learns new vocabulary.

Extreme speed: separate normal gate passes from true area effects. A standard Fuel or Refuel Gate should not fail merely because the car did not linger in a zone. If a normal gate does not activate when crossed on version 1.0.2, use the malfunction branch. For an effect whose tooltip explicitly requires an area, brake before that area or replace it with a dependable event trigger. If the tank empties between two working gates, move the refill earlier, trim the speed spike, add capacity, or strengthen the refill. Overdrive is not a replacement fuel plan after the engine collapses.

Old Fuel Bugs You Should Not Build Around

  • Fixed in 1.0.1: an Overload Gate emptying the tank could make fuel depletion skip refuel cards.
  • Fixed in 1.0.1: refuel cards could give no fuel at extreme speed while Refuel Efficiency was above 100%. The same bug avoided the efficiency cost and allowed a free empty-and-refill loop.
  • Fixed in 1.0.1: an area-gate indicator could appear in the wrong track position for some gate slots. Use the current marker when checking a real area effect.
  • Fixed in 1.0.2: Reserve Tank could fail to bank overflowed fuel at very high speed.
  • Fixed in 1.0.2: Refuel Efficiency text could escape its display box. That was a display fault, not a hidden fuel rule.

A healthy fuel line is almost boring: dependable trigger, safe tank, clean loop. Once one refill survives the speed test, stop feeding the tank extra gate slots and let the tiny car get back to making unreasonable numbers.
