Puzzle Solutions for Side Quests and Winter Beings

Winter beings are the small winter folk tucked around Moominvalley, and in Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth they have a gift for standing beside the exact snowbank you forgot about three tools ago. If your quest log says someone is hungry, scared, hiding, trapped, or waiting for a message, do not comb the whole valley in a polite panic. Match the clue to the tool, go to the landmark, then talk to the quest giver again after the fix. That last chat is where many rewards finally wake up.

This is the cozy heart of cleanup: Moomintroll is making winter less strange by helping odd little neighbors feel safe again. For the cleanest route, do these before lighting the Great Winter Bonfire. The bonfire tracker needs 125 firewood, five guests, one musician, and three winter-being tasks, but Friend of Winter and 100% completion need more than the minimum. Some notes and beings appear only after the right story step, so if something is missing, finish the next main objective, leave and re-enter the area, and talk to the quest giver again. If it still sits in the snow like it has stage fright, reload from the title screen and check after the next story beat.

Quick Quest Checklist

  • Great Winter Bonfire winter beings: Help three qualifying winter beings for the bonfire requirement, then help the rest for Friend of Winter and 100% cleanup.
  • Final hand-in rule: After solving a request, always return to the winter being or character and talk again. Many rewards trigger on that last chat.
  • Best cleanup tools: Shovel, mittens, reinforced mittens, axe, sharp axe, upgraded shovel, longer-lasting matches, dash, and cave access.
  • Rewards to watch: Vase pieces, firewood, letters, tool progress, guest progress, and winter-being achievement progress.

Five Torches for the Scared Winter Being

Starts: at the Bonfire Site, after Too-ticky introduces the bonfire. Required: matches first, then the later Fillyjonk children forest route with the axe and shovel. Solution: light five torches tied to the scared winter being, then return to the Bonfire Site winter being.

  1. From the Bonfire Site, go right, then down to the winter being on the left and light the nearby torch.
  2. During the forest rescue route, light the torch in the old Little My firewood-search area.
  3. Find Fillyjonk's first child and light the torch in that area.
  4. In the next area, go down the rope, shovel the snow to open the path, hit the bird if you want the nearby pickup, and light the torch there.
  5. After finding the third child, take the diagonal upper path to the back forest winter being and light the final torch.

Once all five are lit, return to the Bonfire Site and talk to the winter being again. This can count toward the three winter-being tasks needed for the Great Winter Bonfire.

Hungry Winter Being and the Cave Mushroom

Starts: with the hungry winter being at the Bonfire Site. Required: cave access, the sharp axe, and enough lit candles to move through the dark rooms. Solution: bring back the Cave Mushroom.

Enter the cave for the herb route, light candles as you move, and keep going past the early herb rooms. After breaking through the ice-block path, head into the right-side room to find the Cave Mushroom. Pick it up, return to the hungry winter being at the Bonfire Site, and hand it in. This rewards a vase piece, so check this quest if your vase count stalls near the end.

Diary or Stolen Book Quest

Starts: with the winter being whose book or diary was taken by a bird. Required: snowballs, the Fillyjonk children forest route, and the later Mountain summit rope route. Solution: knock the Diary down from the bird, then return it on the Mountain route.

During the forest rescue east of the bonfire, find Fillyjonk's third child, then look for the nearby bird and hit it with a snowball to get the Diary. Later, go to the Mountain, climb the summit rope route, pick up the letter near the top, then head right from that letter to find the diary winter being. Give back the Diary, finish the follow-up conversation, and take the vase piece reward.

Message in a Bottle

Starts: with the winter being near the Bathing-House water route. Required: the sharp axe from Too-ticky after the whetstone upgrade. Solution: break the strong ice block by the water and deliver the bottle.

Go to the Bathing-House and stand near Too-ticky. Move to the water at the lower right of that area and use the sharp axe on the strong ice block. Pick up the message in a bottle, then walk left and give it to the waiting winter being. This rewards a vase piece and helps with the letter-style cleanup chain.

Snow Fort Friendship Quest

Starts: near Moominhouse after enough guest-chain progress, around the snow fort and two winter beings. Required: reinforced mittens, which let Moomintroll roll large snowballs. Solution: finish the fort, complete any final light prompt, and speak to both beings again.

Talk to the winter beings first, then roll the large snowballs into the empty spots around the fort. Check each side of the fort for a missing snowball socket. If the quest asks for a light or final interaction, do that after the fort is shaped correctly, then talk to the beings again. This can reward a vase piece and counts toward winter-being cleanup.

Trapped Friend and Ice Rescue Tasks

Starts: with winter beings who mention a friend trapped by ice, trees, snow, or a blocked route. Required: axe and shovel, with the sharp axe or upgraded shovel needed for some late blocks. Solution: clear the exact obstacle the clue points at, then talk again.

For the Mountain-base version, go up and left from the base of the Mountain, chop the tree near the winter being, slide down, then shovel the buried snow spot to reveal the hidden friend. For the Pond version, go to the lower Pond or Pond Hill route and help the winter being trapped in the ice. If the tool does nothing, come back after Too-ticky upgrades the axe or shovel.

Hide-and-Seek Winter Being

Starts: with the winter being who asks to play hide-and-seek. Required: broad map access, plus later story routes for the full hiding pool. Solution: check the known hiding areas; the final spot is not guaranteed to be the same for every save.

  • Silver-tray route near Moominhouse.
  • Mountain Hills.
  • Pond Hill and the route toward Joxter.
  • Fillyjonk forest child-rescue route, especially near the final torch area.
  • Cave rooms, including the three snow-covered bushes in the cave hiding area.

Work through the pool instead of trusting one final answer. When the being appears, talk to it each time so the quest advances. The full hide-and-seek chain can give a vase piece, and it is safest to finish it before lighting the Great Winter Bonfire.

Friend Notes and Chain-of-Notes Clues

Friend notes are readable letter or note pickups that point to the next place. Start at the Moominhouse mailbox after you have the shovel and can clear the snow near the southern bridge. Check the mailbox again after early story progress, then keep an eye on Misabel's attic letters and the water clue by the Bathing-House.

For the later chain, follow the clue path through the Bathing-House bottle route, the Mountain summit note near the rope, the lower Pond note near the bottom-left of the upward rope, the forest route all the way right where you rescued one of Fillyjonk's children, and the cave note reached by entering the cave, going right, and checking the bottom of the rope. Return to the Moominhouse mailbox when the chain loops back. One late letter appears after the bonfire celebration, so do not panic if You've Got Mail! is not finished before that final mailbox check.

If the shadow cave note or another chain note is missing, re-read the previous note, leave the area, and return. If it still fails to appear after the right story step, quit to title and reload. A missing note is not a moral failing. It is just Moominvalley being a little too secretive for its own mittened good.

Main Side Quest Chains That Unlock Progress

  • Little My: Win the first snowball fight south of Moominhouse to get Moominmamma's shovel. Later Pond and chase steps help her Great Winter Bonfire route.
  • Fillyjonk children: Starts at Fillyjonk's house after the shovel. Clear snow, rescue the children in the forest, and talk to the family again for guest and route progress.
  • Misabel: Find her briefcase, bring her to Moominhouse, relight the house, follow the crying to the lounge closet, and continue the silver-tray route.
  • Musician lunchbox: Go to the Bathing-House route, knock the bird away from Hemulen's lunchbox with a snowball, then return the route to gain axe progress.
  • Sorry-oo: Rescue Sorry-oo in the later forest route, get the whetstone, upgrade the axe with Too-ticky, and enter the herb cave. This opens major late cleanup.

Before You Light the Great Winter Bonfire

Before committing to the Great Winter Bonfire, finish every winter being you can find, especially torch, hungry, diary, bottle, snow fort, trapped friend, and hide-and-seek tasks. Then check side quest rewards for vase pieces, firewood, and letters. If a counter is stuck, return to the last character involved and talk again before wandering off. Winter becomes much easier to read once every small favor has had its proper little ending.
