Complete Walkthrough: Moominhouse to Spring

If your brain has turned Moominvalley into a drawer full of unlabeled snow keys - shovel here, axe later, suspicious ice absolutely not yet - you are in the right place. Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is gentle, but it loves tool-gated paths. A tool gate is a blocked route that only opens after you get the right tool or upgrade. Push the main story until Moomintroll gets a new tool, then backtrack with a purpose.

This route takes you from the first dark room in Moominhouse to the return of spring. Winter beings are the small winter residents with side requests, and the Great Winter Bonfire is the late-game celebration objective that asks for firewood, guests, a musician, and winter-being help. Before you light that bonfire, do your cleanup. Vase pieces, birds, candles, letters, torches, and snowball targets are much easier to handle before the ending sequence begins.

Objective: Make Moominhouse Safe

Area: Moominhouse. Required tool: none, then matches. Start in Moomintroll's bedroom. Open the curtains or window to get enough light, pick up the matches from the stool, then grab the doorknob from the desk. Use the doorknob on the west door, leave the room, and light the hallway lamp with a match.

Follow the cold wind through the house and close each open window. When you reach Moominmamma and Moominpappa, approach the strong wind from the side instead of walking straight into it. Check on them, inspect Moominmamma's broken vase to start the 25 vase piece quest, then open the basement hatch in the nearby room.

In the basement, collect the five firewood pieces: one near the east lamp, one on the bench, one behind the shelf to the west, one between the boxes to the south, and one near the barrels on the right. Put the firewood in the furnace to restart the heat. After that, go upstairs toward the attic noise and follow the squirrel outside.

  • Before you leave: pick up the early vase pieces in Moominhouse, including the table piece and attic piece if they are available.
  • Recovery tip: if you feel stuck in the opening, look for wind first. An open window is usually the thing stopping the next room from feeling normal.

Objective: Follow the Squirrel to Too-ticky and the Bathing-House

Area: snowy path from Moominhouse to the Bathing-House. Required tool: matches. Go outside through the window and follow the thin trail west. When the path breaks near the cliffs, go south to find the trail again, then interact with the squirrel. Too-ticky helps Moomintroll through the storm and gives him the scarf, which lets him keep exploring outside.

At the Bathing-House, search the cupboard or wardrobe for the mittens. The Ancestor runs off with them, because of course the smallest houseguest chooses chaos before breakfast. Follow the trail until the mittens drop, then pick them up. Mittens let you make snowballs. Use snowballs to break icicles, knock down the large icicle over the gap, and create small snow bridges on the route back.

  • Before you leave: check the Bathing-House closet for a vase piece.
  • Completion note: once you can throw snowballs, start tagging important characters if you want the snowball-related achievement later. Too-ticky is an easy early target.
  • Side path note: on the way toward the Bonfire Site, check the fallen tree east and slightly north of Moominhouse. Use a match on the sparkle inside for a vase piece.

Objective: Start the Great Winter Bonfire and Win the Shovel

Area: old bonfire site and Moominmamma's garden. Required tool: mittens. Return to Moominhouse, answer the knock at the door, and follow Too-ticky to the old bonfire site. Talk to the winter beings nearby and light the first torch when one asks for help. This starts the larger Great Winter Bonfire route.

Next, go south from Moominhouse toward Fillyjonk's path. The deep snow blocks you, and Moominmamma's shovel is in the garden. Little My has it, naturally. Beat her in the first snowball fight to get the shovel. Use the snowmen as cover, break a snowman if she hides too well, and throw only when she steps into open space. After you win, use the shovel to clear deep snow piles.

  • Before you leave: shovel the snow near the southern bridge and check the mailbox for a letter.
  • Bird note: from now on, birds can carry items. If a bird looks too proud of itself, hit it with a snowball and pick up what drops.

Objective: Help Fillyjonk, Misabel, and the Mountain Chase

Area: Fillyjonk's house, Moominhouse, and the Mountain. Required tools: shovel, mittens, matches. Clear the route to Fillyjonk's house, then shovel the snow and break the icicles at her entrance. Return toward Moominhouse when the objective sends you back, and shovel the garden snow to find the child hidden there.

When Misabel loses her briefcase, go outside and shovel the snow pile just below her to find it. Inside Moominhouse, use matches to turn the lights back on room by room. Misabel is hiding in the lounge cupboard. After the house settles, the silver tray goes missing from the kitchen. Exit through the window, follow the footprints west, and keep clearing snow.

When Little My runs ahead, take the northern detour and use the rope route to reach the mountain path. Follow her to the summit area. She will slide away with the silver tray, then demand sticks before giving it back. Shovel the snow down-left of Little My and Hemulen for one stick. For the other, enter the small cave to the south and throw a snowball at the stuck stick in the snow.

Bring the tray back to Misabel. To help her feel ready, collect the rouge compact and jewelry box key from the bathroom or green-door room, open the red box upstairs for the necklace, and take the black fancy dress from the attic. Pick up the dropped letters in the attic while you are there. After the conversations, you receive sturdy yarn.

  • Before you leave: on the mountain route, hit birds with snowballs and talk to winter beings you pass. Some routes here cannot be finished until later, so do not panic at axe-marked trees.
  • Tool upgrade: take the sturdy yarn to Too-ticky at the Bathing-House. She upgrades the mittens into reinforced mittens, which let you roll and push large snowballs.

Objective: Reach the Pond, Meet Joxter, Learn Dash, and Get the Axe

Area: lower Pond, Joxter's camp, Bathing-House. Required tool: reinforced mittens. From the Bathing-House, check the frozen water to the right of Too-ticky for a letter and talk to the winter being nearby. Then use the map and head toward the Pond at the bottom of the valley.

At the lower Pond route, roll a large snowball near the red flag and push it between the cliffs to make a crossing. Light the bonfire you pass. Continue to Joxter's camp. Throw a snowball at Joxter right away if you are tracking snowball targets, because he is easy to miss later.

Help Joxter set up his camp. Clear snow around the camp, collect birch bark and nuts, and use snowballs on nut trees if needed. Find the cooking pot by throwing a snowball at the tree holding it. Joxter teaches Dash, a quick move that lets Moomintroll break through snow clumps and cross some icy routes.

Follow Little My down the southern rope and win the later pond snowball fight. This convinces her to help with the bonfire plan. After returning to Moominhouse, go to the Bathing-House for the musician or Hemulen lunchbox quest. Throw a snowball at the crow sitting on the lunchbox. When a fallen tree blocks the way, take Moominpappa's axe and chop through it.

  • Before you leave: in the Little My fight area, check the southwest bird for a vase piece.
  • Firewood note: after getting the axe, revisit old routes with dead trees. Chopped trees are one of the cleanest ways to build your Great Winter Bonfire firewood count.

Objective: Rescue Fillyjonk's Children and Sorry-oo

Area: forest route and wind route. Required tools: axe, shovel, reinforced mittens, snowballs. Head into the forest to search for Fillyjonk's children. Follow the tracks south and chop the fallen log to enter the next area. The three trails lead to the children: clear snow for the first, chop the tree beside the ledge for the second, and clear snow again for the third.

As you move through the forest, light every torch you see. One winter being task asks for five torches, and this route is the best time to handle it. Go down the rope in the later forest area, shovel open the path, hit the bird for a vase piece, and light the nearby torch. Near the third child, hit the bird for the Diary. Take the diagonal upper path to another winter being and light the torch in the back, then return to the Bonfire Site and talk to the torch winter being after all five are lit.

After the children mention the dog, follow the direction Sorry-oo went. Use a large snowball to bridge the ledge. In the windy area, move between rocks and wait when the mist shows the gust is about to strengthen. When you find Sorry-oo, carry him back. Put him down whenever you need to use tools, clear a route, or make a large snowball to block a strong wind stream.

Bring Sorry-oo to Moominhouse. After the story about the cave, Fillyjonk's children give you the whetstone. This is your cue to upgrade the axe.

  • Before you leave: throw a snowball at Sorry-oo during this chain if you are tracking all valid targets.
  • Vase note: talk to Fillyjonk's children in Moominhouse after the forest rescue, get their puzzle piece from the attic, then talk to them again for a vase piece.
  • Cellar note: once you have the axe, break the wooden crate in the Moominhouse cellar for another vase piece.

Objective: Upgrade the Axe and Shovel, Then Clear the Cave

Area: Fillyjonk route, Bathing-House, Cave. Required tools: axe, whetstone, shovel. On the way back to the Bathing-House, stop near Fillyjonk's house. Chop the tree north of her house, then shovel the snow behind it to find scrap metal. At the crossroads, chop the tree southwest of the path to open the Bathing-House route.

Talk to Too-ticky at the Bathing-House. Give her the whetstone to sharpen the axe, and give her the scrap metal to upgrade the shovel. The sharp axe breaks stronger ice blocks. The upgraded shovel handles late snow cleanup. Before going into the cave, break the ice block by the water below and right of Too-ticky to get the message in a bottle, then give it to the winter being farther left for a vase piece.

At the Cave entrance, throw a snowball at the mouse near the entrance if you are doing snowball cleanup, then light the candle to the right. Inside, head right and light the first candle. Go down the rope and check the left hole for the oil lamp. This becomes the longer-lasting matches upgrade once you bring it to Too-ticky later.

Work through the cave slowly. Light candles as you enter each room, break stronger ice blocks with the sharp axe, and collect the medicinal herbs. Follow Shadow through the cave route. You will find herbs in the west route, under ice, in the eastern cavern after shoveling, near the spiky rock, and after chasing Shadow deeper. Pick up the Cave Mushroom when you find it, because a winter being wants it later.

After the herb route, use the cave shortcut back toward Moominhouse and give the herbs for Sorry-oo's recovery. Then return to the cave to talk to Shadow, head to the Wolf Clearing north of the forest, and throw snowballs at the wolves' eyes to scare them away. Escort Sorry-oo out while keeping him inside the warmth from your matches. If his warmth bar gets low, stop the current task, relight, and reset your position before moving again.

  • Candle note: light every cave candle as you pass it. Cave candle cleanup is much worse when you have to remember which dark corner you skipped.
  • Mouse note: if you find mouse children in the cave, snowball them before completing the mother mouse hand-in if you are being careful with snowball targets.
  • Tool upgrade: after the cave and Sorry-oo route, talk to Too-ticky at the Bathing-House with the oil lamp to upgrade your matches.

Objective: Finish Great Winter Bonfire Preparation

Area: whole valley cleanup, Mountain, Bonfire Site. Required tools: shovel, reinforced mittens, Dash, axe, sharp axe, upgraded shovel, longer-lasting matches. The Great Winter Bonfire asks for 125 firewood, five guests, one musician, and three winter-being tasks. You build this through the main route, not by standing at the bonfire and hoping everyone wanders in politely.

If you are short on firewood, revisit old areas with the axe and sharp axe. Chop dead trees, shovel snow piles, break stronger ice, check cave routes, and finish winter being tasks that reward firewood or vase pieces. Little My also has a useful hidden firewood stash: in the forest area, climb the slope, place a giant snowball between the high cliffs, then shovel beneath the snow.

For the musician route, head toward the Mountain and follow the musical notes. Sorry-oo helps point out the hidden snow lump. Find the missing ski pieces and horn: let Sorry-oo guide you to the snow, break the top bushes near Misabel's area for the horn, and let Shadow help find the final ski piece under snow. Once this chain is done and your firewood count is ready, the game lets you light the Great Winter Bonfire.

  • Do this before lighting the Great Winter Bonfire: collect all 25 vase pieces, repair Moominmamma's vase, finish winter being tasks, check letters and mailboxes, light cave candles and outdoor bonfires, finish torch cleanup, upgrade every tool, hit bird targets, and snowball any valid character you have not tagged yet.
  • Important: treat the Great Winter Bonfire as your final cleanup line. The safest route is to finish side quests and collectibles before you light it.

Objective: Light the Bonfire and Complete the Final Ice Sequence

Area: Great Winter Bonfire, final cave and ice route. Required tools: all main tools and upgrades. When cleanup is done, return to the Bonfire Site and light the Great Winter Bonfire. During the party, throw a snowball at the Ancestor and any other valid character you may have missed. Near Hemulen, hit the top of the tree with a snowball when the horn is needed.

After the celebration, check the Moominhouse mailbox before meeting Too-ticky if you are tracking letters. Then follow the final story route. In the dark cave, use your matches and keep to the upper path east, then turn south. Cross the bridge, move right, take the north path at the intersection, and exit east.

Outside, make a giant snowball to reach the next area. In the windy ice section, use the moving ice blocks in the water as cover and cross between gusts. In the last dark area, you will not have normal match help. Find the bridge near the first interaction, go south, then continue east until you reach another wooden bridge. Work around it and keep heading east.

When you can see Too-ticky and the squirrel through the gap, throw a snowball at the squirrel if you are still cleaning snowball targets. Continue through the last ice route, light the final small fire when the game asks for it, and stay with the story. The ending is not just a checklist popping. Moomintroll has learned the shape of winter: strange, cold, frightening, and still full of people worth helping. Finish the sequence to bring spring back to Moominvalley, wake Moominmamma and Moominpappa, and see Snufkin return.
