How to Beat the Spider Crab and Leave Lighthouse Island

Route answer: Speak to the Lighthouse Keeper, give him a Beer, take the Empty Beer Can he returns, and use it as bait from the Lighthouse dock. Kill the Spider Crab, bring its Spider Crab Shell back to the Keeper, and accept the Boat Keys.

That first Spider Crab wipe can feel like the game repossessed your whole fishing trip: the crab escapes, the can is gone, and another Beer stands between you and a retry. Prepare before you cast. This is where the clam-gathering holiday becomes an armed hunt for a huge crustacean with anger issues.

1. Turn Clams into Your Starter Kit

Collect the Clams around the Lighthouse shore. Eat one when you need hunger or health, then throw the surplus to the Lighthouse Keeper for your first cash. Buy the Basic Fishing Rod, equip the free lure, and cast from the dock or shore. The first small catches are easy enough to finish with your fists; give the ordinary catches to the Keeper for more money.

Buy or upgradeWhy it comes here
Basic Fishing RodOpens the repeatable catch-kill-sell loop that funds the rest of the route.
Free lure, then a few Hotdog LuresStart with the free lure. Add Hotdogs once you can spare money for bait that pulls in larger early catches.
Brass Knuckles or KnifeEither is a sensible step up from bare fists. The Knife costs more but is the more comfortable solo pick.
Sharpness for one weaponEquip your chosen weapon and use the anvil beside the Lighthouse door. Focus your cash on one melee weapon instead of dividing it between both.
BeerBuy it after your health, food, and weapon are ready. Giving it to the Keeper creates the one-use boss bait.
RadarSave it until you have the Boat Keys and are ready to navigate away from the island.

Patch callout: Useful reference prices are about $3 for the Basic Fishing Rod, $1 per Hotdog Lure, $24 for Brass Knuckles, $45 for the Knife, $12 for Beer, and $10 for the Radar. Check the current shop before budgeting every last clam, because prices and combat balance may change.

2. Make and Cast the Spider Crab Bait

  1. Finish the opening conversation with the Lighthouse Keeper.
  2. Buy one Beer from the shop by the Lighthouse door. Give it to the Keeper instead of drinking it.
  3. Take the Empty Beer Can he offers. This is boss bait, not trash.
  4. Equip the Basic Fishing Rod and attach the Empty Beer Can as its lure.
  5. Stand on the wooden Lighthouse dock and cast into the surrounding sea. Use the side that gives you a clear route onto the broad ground near the Lighthouse.

With the Empty Beer Can equipped, that cast should hook the Spider Crab. If the boss does not appear, confirm that the can—not the free lure or a Hotdog—is attached to the rod. The can is consumed by the attempt, so do not cast until the crew is ready. Apparently the crab believes in nonrefundable deposits.

3. Dodge the Charge and Punish the Stun

Before casting, fill your health and hunger, keep one or two Clams or edible catches for healing, and equip your sharpened melee weapon. Pull the Spider Crab onto open ground instead of brawling at the water's edge. The area between the dock and Lighthouse gives you room to sidestep, while the higher ground can make the crab work harder to reach you.

  1. Bait the charge: Hold medium range and face the crab. When it commits to a straight rush, move sideways instead of backpedaling along the same line.
  2. Wait for the daze: A missed charge leaves the Spider Crab stunned, marked by spinning stars over its head.
  3. Take the short punish: Run behind it, land two or three melee hits, and leave before the stars disappear. A safe hit is worth more than becoming seafood beside your own Knife.
  4. Reset nearby: Use the open or raised ground near the Lighthouse, but do not run far across the island. At long range the crab may leap instead of charging, which wastes time and breaks the stun rhythm.
  5. Watch the white bar: The second white bar beneath the boss's health is its escape timer. If it runs out, the Spider Crab disappears and you must obtain another Empty Beer Can.

Solo: Bring a Knife or upgraded Brass Knuckles, full health and hunger, and spare food. Take only one or two hits during each stun if your timing feels shaky. Do not trade claw hits for a longer combo; the steady charge-dodge-punish loop is cheaper than buying another Beer.

Co-op: Let one player stand in front as the charge target while everyone else stays outside that lane. Collapse on the crab when the stars appear, then spread out before it recovers. A spare player can focus on healing or reviving the crew. After the kill, choose one person to carry the Shell straight to the Keeper so the quest item does not get lost in the fish-and-weapons pile.

4. Hand In the Shell and Take the Boat

When the Spider Crab dies, pick up the item named Spider Crab Shell. Ordinary Meat Chunks do not complete the quest. Carry the Shell to the Lighthouse Keeper, hand it over, and accept the offered Boat Keys. Finish both interactions before heading to the boat.

Buy the handheld Radar from the Keeper and bring it aboard. The Boat Keys let you use the boat, while the Radar now gives you a useful destination marker. Equip it and steer northwest toward Forest Island. This is when the Radar earns its keep—not while you are still circling Lighthouse Island on foot and wondering whether it detects financially ruined fishermen.

If the Spider Crab Escapes or Wipes the Crew

Reset with the same dependable loop: collect Clams, eat only what you need, give the surplus to the Keeper, and use the free lure for low-cost catches. Add Hotdog bait when you can afford it, then sell ordinary catches until you can replace food, sharpen your chosen melee weapon, and buy another Beer. Give the new Beer to the Lighthouse Keeper, take another Empty Beer Can, and retry. Leave optional collection hunting, cosmetics, and gambling until the Boat Keys and Radar are safe; Lighthouse Island has already taken enough of the budget.
