Complete Island Progression and Ending
Patch callout — verified September 15, 2026: This route matches How to Fish Patch 1.0.12, Steam build 25127368. The patch rebalanced piranha and slightly weakened Tuna, so older videos may show different fight pacing. Patch 1.0.5 removed the old bug that allowed travel to locked islands, so island-skip tricks are not part of this route.
Spoiler warning: This section names every required island, boss, quest item, reward, and ending step.
You know the scene: the boss is dead, the beach looks like a seafood crime scene, and somebody sells the one tiny trophy the NPC wanted. Now the Radar has no new marker and the crew is blaming the boat. Avoid that comedy routine by keeping every named bait, boss body, trophy, coordinate reward, and key until the next route step is complete.
The required story order is Lighthouse → Forest → Desert → Rocks → Volcano → Mainland. Mainland is the ending destination, not a sixth fishing island. This is a clean main-story route, not the only way to shop, explore, or complete optional activities.

How Coordinates, the Radar, and Boat Upgrades Work
Coordinates are quest rewards, not X/Y numbers you type into a map. After the Forest, Desert, and Rocks hand-ins, take the offered coordinate reward to register the next colored destination. The directions below are approximate; steer toward the matching Radar dot instead of trying to hold a perfect compass line.
- Buy the handheld Radar after unlocking the first boat. It is a carried navigation tool, so equip and hold it while sailing to see its display.
- The Boat Radar upgrade first appears on Desert and mounts the display on the boat. It is optional and does not replace a coordinate reward.
- The optional Medium Motor first appears on Forest. The optional Big Motor first appears on Rocks. They shorten travel but do not unlock islands.
- If the next dot is missing, stop sailing and check the trophy hand-in and reward-claim interaction. A faster engine only lets you get lost at a more professional speed.
Solo: The mounted Boat Radar becomes useful on the longer ocean legs. Fund the next required bait, weapon, ammunition, and healing before buying speed upgrades.
Co-op: With the handheld Radar, let one player navigate while another drives. Give required trophies and bodies to one named carrier so they do not disappear into four inventories and a debate.
1. Lighthouse: Get the First Boat
Required — NPC: Lighthouse Keeper. Bait or catch: Beer, then Empty Beer Can. Hand-in: Spider Crab Shell to the Lighthouse Keeper.
- Talk to the Lighthouse Keeper and complete the opening clam prompts. Eat a Clam when asked, then give him spare Clams to earn money.
- Buy a Beer and give it to the Lighthouse Keeper. Interact again and take the Empty Beer Can.
- Equip the Empty Beer Can as bait on the Crab Fishing Rod. Prepare your health, hunger, and weapon before casting.
- Defeat the Spider Crab. Sidestep its charge, then attack while it is stunned. Watch the white escape bar below the boss health bar; if it expires, the crab escapes and the attempt must be repeated.
- Pick up the Spider Crab Shell. Do not sell, eat, gamble, or abandon it.
- Return the Shell to the Lighthouse Keeper, finish the completed-quest interaction, and take the Boat Keys.
- Buy the handheld Radar, board the motorboat, hold the Radar, and follow the green marker roughly northwest to Forest.
Recovery: If the Spider Crab escapes or defeats you, gather and sell more Clams or ordinary catches, buy another Beer, and repeat the Keeper exchange.
Solo: Bring a Knife or another upgraded melee weapon and attack during the stunned-charge window. Co-op: One player can draw the charge while the others attack from the sides, but give the Shell to the player handling the quest.
2. Forest: Leeches and Giant Piranha
Required — NPC: Swamp Daughter by the lake. Bait or catch: Three Leeches for Leech Bait. Hand-in: Giant Piranha Skeleton to the Swamp Daughter.
- Talk to the Swamp Daughter first so her 0/3 objective is active.
- Find three Leeches on land. Search the grassy settlement, around the central shack, and near the lakeside quest area. They are small ground creatures, not fishing catches.
- Kill and pick up each Leech. Hand all three to the Swamp Daughter, then interact again to claim Leech Bait.
- Equip Leech Bait on the Fishing Rod and cast into the Forest lake. Defeat Giant Piranha and clear its smaller piranha adds when they block your firing lane.
- Collect the Giant Piranha Skeleton, return it to the Swamp Daughter, and claim the offered Island 3 coordinates.
- Return to the boat and follow the yellow Radar marker roughly west to Desert. The Medium Motor is an optional speed upgrade available from Forest onward.
Solo: Bring a ranged weapon, healing food, and spare ammunition. Clear enough small piranhas to keep an escape lane open. Co-op: Put one player on add control while the others focus the boss and watch its escape bar.
3. Desert: Trade for the Carrot and Beat Pufferfish
Required — NPC: Pufferfish Hunter, the tourist under a tree. Bait or catch: One accepted dead creature for the Carrot. Hand-in: Pufferfish Fin to the Pufferfish Hunter.
- Talk to the Pufferfish Hunter to open his bait request.
- Bring one accepted creature: Bowlfish, Dripper, Needlefish, Oarfish, Seahorse, Superdwarf Fish, or Bing Bong. You need only one. On a first visit, use Standard Lures and aim for Bowlfish, Needlefish, or Seahorse.
- Kill and pick up the accepted catch before handing it over. Complete the interaction and take the offered Carrot; the reward requires a separate claim after delivery.
- Equip the Carrot as bait and cast in Desert water to summon Pufferfish. Use a palm tree, rock, or building to break its rolling path. When the poison cloud appears, widen your circle instead of cutting through it.
- After the kill, collect the Pufferfish Fin. Return it to the Pufferfish Hunter and claim the Island 4 coordinates.
- Follow the red Radar marker roughly west to Rocks. The optional Boat Radar becomes available on Desert.
Solo: Fight in open space with solid cover nearby, reload between charges, and do not chase through poison for one last shot. Co-op: Spread out so one roll or poison cloud cannot pressure the whole group.
Optional: Blue Shark and the Grillmaster quest unlock cooking, but neither is required to reach Rocks.
4. Rocks: Preserve the Tuna and Summon Albatross
Required — NPC: Seagull Keeper at the island shop. Bait or catch: Professional Boss Lure and a dead Tuna. Hand-in: Albatross Head to the Seagull Keeper.
- Talk to the Seagull Keeper and activate the island-passage request.
- Buy a Professional Boss Lure, equip it on the Fishing Rod, and cast to hook Tuna.
- Defeat Tuna and preserve its whole dead body. This Tuna is required because its body triggers the Albatross encounter; it does not give a separate coordinate reward.
- Carry the Tuna into the grassy Albatross encounter area. Make sure no other boss is active, then release the Tuna so it lies unheld on the ground.
- Wait for Albatross to arrive. Use solid cover while the bird circles and fire during clear passes. A longer-range gun is safer than trying to convince a shotgun that the sky is close enough.
- Collect the Albatross Head. Return it to the Seagull Keeper and claim the flash drive containing Island 5 coordinates.
- Follow the pink Radar marker north to Volcano. Rocks also sells the optional Big Motor.
Solo: Bring a ranged weapon and use the shop or another solid structure against the bird’s projectiles. Co-op: One player watches the Tuna and trophy while the others spread out and track Albatross.
Recovery: If Albatross does not appear, confirm that the Tuna is dead, unheld, inside the grassy encounter area, and that no other boss is active. If the Tuna was sold or lost, catch a replacement with another Professional Boss Lure.
Optional: The casino, roulette, slots, and ordinary collection fishing can wait. None is required for the Volcano route.
5. Volcano: Fish Bucket, Both Whales, and the Ending
Required — NPC: Whale Scientist in the yellow hazmat suit near the military area. Bait or catch: Five eligible creatures, then the Fish Bucket and a dead Bowhead Whale. Hand-in: The Mutated Bowhead Whale Fin—named Whale Fin in the inventory—to the Whale Scientist.
- Talk to the Whale Scientist and activate his bait request.
- Catch and kill five eligible creatures. Scientific Lures provide an on-island supply, but other eligible ordinary catches also work. Pick up every creature before delivery. Repeat species count, so you do not need five different catches.
- Give the five creatures to the Scientist one at a time. Bait, loose trophies, and excluded boss creatures do not count. After the fifth hand-in, interact again and take the Fish Bucket.
- Equip the Fish Bucket as bait on the Fishing Rod and cast into the water around Volcano. This summons the normal Bowhead Whale.
- Defeat Bowhead Whale and keep its whole dead body. The normal whale does not drop the final Fin; its body is the trigger for the next fight.
- Carry the body up the wooden-plank path to the crater. Make sure no other boss is active, then release the dead Bowhead Whale inside the main volcano trigger.
- Wait for the eruption and defeat the Mutated Bowhead Whale. Keep moving during its leaps, slams, and lava attacks.
- Pick up the dropped Whale Fin. Return it to the Whale Scientist, finish the quest interaction, and take the final military-boat keys.
- Go to the expedition boat. Clear any active boss, put down anything held in your hands, and interact with the boat. This final departure interaction takes the crew to the Mainland and completes the game.
Solo: Stock healing, food, ammunition, and a strong sustained-fire weapon before using the Fish Bucket. Fight from range and move as soon as either whale launches upward. Co-op: Assign one body carrier, one player to watch revives and hazards, and the rest to sustained damage. After the mutated fight, take the Fin straight to the Scientist.
Recovery: If the volcano does nothing, check the four trigger rules: use the normal Bowhead Whale, kill it first, release the body inside the volcano trigger, and clear every other active boss. If the body appears lost, search nearby dropped items and every crew inventory before loading your last good save.
Optional before or after the ending: Sunfish, The Old Pike, Blue Shark, Goblin Shark, ordinary collection catches, Drip variants, achievements, and casino rewards are not required for the Mainland ending.
