Co-op Setup, Saves, and Common Fixes
The boss is dead, the trophy is missing, and one crewmate has achieved the rare invisible-hands build. Before the fishing trip becomes a multiplayer crime scene, identify the host, save name, and game version. Most recovery checks depend on getting the crew back into the same hosted world.
Patch check: This section was checked on September 15, 2026, with Patch 1.0.12 as the latest listed build. The current lobby limit is eight players total, including the host. The Steam store description still says one to four players, but Patch 1.0.4 raised the live lobby cap to eight. Co-op uses Steam networking on the Windows PC version.
How to Host, Invite, and Join
- Choose the regular host. Use the player whose save will hold the continuing campaign. There is no automatic host handoff in the normal Patch 1.0.12 flow.
- Launch from the Steam Library. This gives the game access to Steam networking, invitations, and the overlay.
- Create or load the intended online save. Choose a private lobby for an invite-only run. Patch 1.0.5 made private sessions joinable only through invitations.
- Let the host enter the world. Wait until the host can move, open inventory, and interact. Then open the in-game menu and use Invite Friend.
- Accept through Steam. The default Steam Overlay shortcut is Shift+Tab. If the friend picker does not open, enable the overlay under Steam > Settings > In Game and under How to Fish > Properties > General.
- Use Join by ID for a joinable session when needed. Copy the numeric session or Lobby ID shown by the host. The guest chooses Join by ID and enters the complete number without spaces. This number identifies the active lobby; it is not Steam App ID 4001890.
If the host changes a session between public and private, restart the session before sending new invitations. Patch 1.0.5 requires a restart before the changed session type takes effect.
What Is Host-Bound or Player-Bound?
| Progress | Where it lives | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Islands, NPC quests, bosses, boat upgrades, and shared campaign money | Host's selected world save | Use the same host and save to continue. Joining a different world does not advance the original campaign. |
| Quest items, boss trophies, rewards, and loose world objects | Current hosted world | Hand in important items before leaving when possible. Do not expect an object from one hosted world to appear in another. |
| Guest inventory, weapons, and gear | That guest's player record inside the hosted save | Rejoin the same host and save before calling an empty inventory permanent. This is not a portable account inventory that freely follows the guest between worlds. |
| Steam achievements | Each player's Steam account | Each crewmate must receive the unlock on their own account. Check every player's achievement page after a co-op objective instead of assuming one unlock copied to everyone. |
The host is the keeper of the expedition, while each guest has a character record within that expedition. If the regular host is absent, another player cannot resume the same world through the normal lobby menu unless a backed-up save file is transferred manually.
Local Saves, Backups, and Steam Cloud
On Windows, the local saves are under %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Dazed Games\How to Fish\Saves. Patch 1.0.12 added Steam Cloud, but Steam still synchronizes local files when the game starts and exits. Cloud sync is transport, not a rewind button.
- Close How to Fish completely. Wait until Steam no longer shows it as running.
- Open the local folder. Press Win+R, paste
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Dazed Games\How to Fish, and press Enter. - Copy the entire How to Fish folder. Place the copy in a dated folder outside AppData.
- Leave that copy untouched. Make another working copy if you later test a restore. Back up before deleting a slot, replacing files, disabling Cloud, transferring a host save, or reinstalling.
Since Patch 1.0.6, the game writes progress when the host chooses Save, Main Menu, or Quit, and it autosaves about once per minute. A crash does not trigger another save. Patch 1.0.11 added corruption checks and internal save backups, but the patch notes do not provide a manual backup-file restoration procedure.
For an older local campaign, launch and exit the game once on the PC that holds the wanted save so Patch 1.0.12 can upload it. Wait until Steam shows Cloud status as up to date before opening the game elsewhere. If Steam asks you to choose between local and cloud copies, back up the local folder first and select the timestamp tied to the machine and session you know is correct.
Invite and Version-Mismatch Checks
- Have everyone quit to desktop, restart Steam, and check for an update.
- Confirm every PC is on the same build. Patch 1.0.10 added the game version to
Player.log, so save that log when one machine appears different. - Keep Steam online and enable the Steam Overlay for both host and guest.
- Let the host load the world, then send a fresh invitation. Do not reuse an invitation or Lobby ID from a closed session.
- Check the Steam Relay message on the main menu. Red text means the Steam connection failed during initialization. Restart Steam, launch from the Library, and create a fresh lobby.
- If one old save rejects invitations, back it up and test a disposable new session. If the test works, preserve the old save instead of deleting it; the result only narrows the problem.
- On the affected PC, open How to Fish > Properties > Installed Files and choose Verify integrity of game files.
No single step fixes every connection problem. Change one thing at a time and stop when the backed-up campaign works again.
Desync, Empty Inventory, and Stuck Quest Items
- Freeze the fish-based economy. Do not sell, cook, gamble, or throw another quest item while the host and guests see different states.
- Confirm the world. Check the host, save name, island, and last completed boss. Empty hands in another hosted world do not prove the original inventory is gone.
- Search the current scene. Check every inventory slot, the NPC's feet, the boss arena, the boat, and nearby ground. Dropped weapons use orange markers on Patch 1.0.12.
- Remember the ground-item cap. The save keeps up to 64 loose objects and gives priority to weapons, tools, quest items, and creatures. That still does not make the beach a reliable filing cabinet.
- Complete the physical hand-in. Stand close to the correct NPC with the required catch or trophy equipped. Use the displayed Throw or Sell prompt; Q is the default keyboard throw used for NPC hand-ins. Repeated opening dialogue can mean the item has not reached the NPC yet.
- Resync carefully. If the host still sees the correct item and quest state, use Save, return to the main menu, reload the same slot, and invite one guest at a time. Check each inventory before inviting the next person.
If the host also sees a missing quest item or reward, stop changing the world. Close the game, make a fresh dated copy of the entire local folder, and keep the current Player.log with the save name, patch number, island, NPC, missing item, and host or guest role. Do not delete the damaged slot, hand-edit story flags, or swap unknown backup files into the live folder. Preserve both the live folder and your earlier backup for a bug report—one vanished trophy is enough wildlife drama for the evening.
