Early Research Tree Notes and Machine Buy Checks

Farm to Table loves a shiny unlock trap. One minute you are admiring your cute coastal restaurant, and the next your new machine is sitting there like fancy counter art while the kitchen is missing one basic crop and the order bar is quietly preparing a tiny disaster. Treat machines and research as service tools, not trophies. Every unlock should answer one clear question: does this help me grow, process, cook, serve, or earn faster today?

A research node is a point on the Research Tree that spends resources to unlock a feature or upgrade. A machine is a placed production station that turns farm goods into recipe goods or opens new food routes. Farm to Table is still in Early Access, so costs, timers, recipe prices, staff behavior, and storage rules can change. If your in-game tooltip shows a cost, material list, timer, or recipe that is not listed here, trust the game screen first.

Tip: before buying a node or machine, take one quick screenshot of the tooltip or build panel. You want the name, prerequisite, cost, unlock text, and current build. It feels fussy for about five seconds, then saves you from buying the Bakery Oven before your farm can feed it.

Early Research Priority

1Crop FarmingShows as the starting point of the early Research Tree.Resource icons are shown on the node; exact amounts are not listed here.Base crop progress for recipes, machine chains, and steady income.Your menu keeps running out of basic ingredients.
2Fast TravelAppears on an early branch near Crop Farming.Check the node panel before spending.Cuts travel time between farm, restaurant, storage, island gathering, and fishing routes.Your day is disappearing into walking.
3Customer Patience IAppears on an early service branch.Check the node panel for the exact cost and value.Gives more room during open hours before customers lose patience.Orders are almost making it, but plates are arriving a little late.
4Tips IAppears on an early service branch.Check the node panel for the exact bonus.Improves the money side of clean service. You can already finish orders without panic.
5Construction IAppears later in the tree.Check prerequisite and cost on your tree.Helps when build space, land expansion, or layout fixes become the block.Tables, counters, shelves, machines, or staff paths are cramped.
6Bakery OvenAppears later in the tree; also watch for Bakery Oven quest/build prompts.Check the node and build panel before spending.Opens baking planning once recipes and ingredients are ready. You can feed the baking route every day.
7Handy Hazel AccessAppears later in the tree.Check the node panel for the exact result.Hold until your save clearly shows what Hazel changes.Only after service, storage, and crop supply are stable.

Machine Buy Checks

Before you buy any machine, follow this chain: ingredient source - machine input - machine output - recipe - customer plate. If one link is blank, wait. A machine with no steady input is not automation. It is a very confident shelf.

MachineWhat it producesHow to unlockBuild costInput/output statusProcessing timeRecipes enabledPriority call
Bakery OvenBaking-route dishes or products once a valid baking recipe is available.Use the Bakery Oven node or the quest/build step shown in your save.Check the build panel.Use only the recipe or oven panel shown in your save.Check the oven panel.Baking recipes only after your recipe screen names them.Medium hold. Build after crop supply and recipe demand are real.
WindmillMachine product for later food chains.Named as a farm machine; check your shop, quest, or research screen for the exact unlock path.Check the build panel.Do not assume the input or output until the machine panel shows it.Check the machine panel.Only count recipes that show the Windmill output in your recipe list.Watchlist. Good if it feeds several dishes; weak if it idles.
DairyDairy-machine output for recipes that ask for it.Named as a farm machine; check your save for the exact unlock path.Check the build panel.Needs the matching animal-product supply before it pays off.Check the machine panel.Use when recipes clearly ask for Dairy output.Later early-game. Do not buy before animals and storage are ready.
Tomato PresserTomato-machine output for tomato-heavy chains.Named as a farm machine; check your save for the exact unlock path.Check the build panel.Needs a steady tomato buffer near the machine.Check the machine panel.Use only when your recipe screen asks for its output.Strong for tomato-heavy menus, but not before tomato supply is stable.
Other production machinesAdvanced ingredients or products for later recipes.Use the unlock path shown by your research tree, quest log, shop, or build panel.Varies by machine; check the build panel.Read input and output on the machine before buying.Check each panel.Match each machine to a known recipe before spending.Buy broad-use machines before narrow specialty chains.

Simple Upgrade Route

  1. Stabilize crops first. If the menu is empty, more machines just create a new way to be empty.
  2. Shorten movement second. Fast Travel or a tighter layout helps when the farm-to-kitchen route eats the day.
  3. Protect service third. Customer Patience I helps when orders barely miss, but it will not replace prep.
  4. Improve income fourth. Tips I shines after you can serve cleanly.
  5. Add machines last. A machine should turn stored ingredients into sellable food before the doors open.

If you already bought the wrong machine, do not restart your farm. Remove the dish that needs the missing output, close or shorten service for one prep day, move storage beside the idle machine, and run a smaller menu until the chain works. One calm dinner with two reliable dishes beats five fancy recipes held together with hope, loose tomatoes, and kitchen noises.

Tip: if a machine sits idle for a full day, machine speed is not your bottleneck. Your real problem is ingredient supply, storage distance, recipe demand, or walking time. Fix that link first, then buy the next upgrade with actual confidence.
