Relic Backpack Synergies and Safe Placement Examples

Place the sale target first, add protection or cleanup second, and activate the dangerous relic last. That order prevents most backpack disasters in Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault. Quality is the star-number shown on a relic, and higher Quality raises its sale value. A Pointed effect acts in the red arrow's direction. If that arrow faces an empty slot or points outside the backpack, it hits nothing.

You know the scene: one relic is carrying the run, the bag is packed, and a final bit of heroic accounting turns the payday into smoke. Use an empty edge slot as a safety switch. Park dangerous arrows there until every target, shield, Battery, or absorber is ready.

Version scope: PC version 1.0 Hotfix 1. These are placement patterns, not fixed-gold comparisons. Starting Quality, rarity, Deluxe status, relic wording, perks, demand, events, shop bonuses, and customer effects can change the final amount. Read each relic's exact effect and rarity limits before completing a chain.

Read the Trigger Before Moving the Relic

  • Once Placed: Activates as soon as the relic enters the required slot.
  • Corner: Activates in a backpack corner.
  • Left-Right or Top-Bottom: Activates on the named backpack edge.
  • Pointed: Acts on the relic in the red arrow's direction.
  • Ongoing: Can activate more than once while its conditions remain valid.
  • Next Time: Waits for the next listed action or status.
  • Back to Tresna: Activates when the expedition ends, including a return by pendant.

Each diagram shows only the slots needed for the interaction. A dot means an empty or unrelated slot. Use relics whose arrows and highlighted targets match the diagram; not every relic points in the same direction.

Know What Gets Destroyed First

  • Burn: Destroys its target unless that target has Armor. Armor blocks that Burn and is then removed. A protected relic can still resolve an effect triggered by being Burned.
  • Shock: Raises the target's Quality and makes it Overcharged. The Shock source destroys itself. Shocking an Overcharged relic destroys the target.
  • Battery: Removes Overcharged and then destroys itself. The target keeps the Quality already gained from Shock.
  • Petrify: Replaces the target with an Aetherium crystal of the same rarity. The original sellable relic is gone, and unspent Aetherium is destroyed when the run ends.
  • Absorb: Destroys the relic named by its effect and adds that relic's current Quality to the absorbing relic.

Kalina: Armor the Target Before Applying Burn

Pattern conditions: Dimension: Kalina. Quality and rarity: use the current displayed values and obey all rarity limits in the relic text. Modifiers: no fixed Deluxe bonus, perk, demand change, event, shop bonus, or customer bonus is assumed. Version: PC 1.0 Hotfix 1.

Relevant effect: Burn destroys an unarmored target. Armor lets the target survive one Burn, and a Burned trigger can still resolve through that protection.

ReadyBurn →Armored sale relic with a Burned effectArmor ↑Record the target's displayed Quality and value.
After BurnBurn source follows its own textSame relic; Armor marker removed; Burned effect resolvedArmor source follows its own textUse the new displayed Quality and value. The increase comes from the target's Burned effect, not from Armor itself.
  1. Place the intended sale relic in the center.
  2. Place the Armor source below it with its valid arrow pointing up. Confirm that the target receives Armor.
  3. Place the Burn source to the left with its valid arrow pointing right.
  4. Confirm that the target remains in the center, its Armor is spent, and its Burned effect has resolved.

Fallback: No Armor relic? Point Burn outside the bag, aim it at cheap stock you accept losing, or skip the interaction. Your best relic is merchandise, not kindling.

The Gallery: Shock Once, Then Discharge

Pattern conditions: Dimension: The Gallery. Quality and rarity: use the current displayed values and obey the target rules on the Shock and Battery relics. Modifiers: no Deluxe bonus, Shock multiplier, perk, demand change, event, shop bonus, or customer bonus is assumed. Version: PC 1.0 Hotfix 1.

Relevant effect: Shock increases the target's Quality, applies Overcharged, and consumes the Shock source. A second Shock destroys an Overcharged target. A Battery removes Overcharged and consumes itself.

ReadyShock →Sale target without OverchargedCompatible Battery ↑Record the target's displayed Quality and value.
After Shock and dischargeEmpty; Shock source consumedTarget remains and is no longer OverchargedEmpty; Battery consumedThe target keeps its added Quality, so its displayed value remains higher.
  1. Place the clean target in the center.
  2. Place a compatible Battery where its effect will reach that target.
  3. Place the Shock source last, aimed at the target.
  4. Confirm that both utility relics disappear and the target remains without an Overcharged marker.

Some Back to Tresna effects Shock the whole backpack. A clean relic becomes Overcharged, but an already Overcharged relic is destroyed. Multiple return triggers can hit the same stock more than once, so remove extra triggers or discharge every keeper before leaving.

Fallback: No Battery? Shock a valuable relic no more than once, isolate it from every other Shock effect, and audit all Back to Tresna triggers before extracting. A smaller safe payday beats another backpack-shaped crater.

Aeolia: Secure the Absorber Before Petrifying a Donor

Pattern conditions: Dimension: Aeolia. Quality and rarity: record the donor, resulting crystal, and absorber's current displayed values; obey every target or rarity limit on the relics. Modifiers: no Deluxe bonus, transformation bonus, perk, demand change, event, shop bonus, or customer bonus is assumed. Version: PC 1.0 Hotfix 1.

Relevant effect: Petrify replaces its target with an Aetherium crystal of the same rarity. Absorb destroys the target listed in its effect and adds that target's current Quality to the absorber. Any Aetherium still in the backpack when the run ends is destroyed.

After AbsorbPetrify source follows its own textEmpty; crystal consumedAbsorber ←The absorber gains the crystal's current Quality, increasing its displayed value.
  1. Find a compatible Absorb relic and check its target and rarity limits before sacrificing anything.
  2. Place the donor in the center and aim Petrify at it from the left.
  3. After the donor becomes Aetherium, record the crystal's displayed Quality.
  4. Place the absorber to the right with its valid arrow pointing left. Confirm that the crystal disappears and the absorber's Quality rises by the amount allowed by its text.

Fallback: If no compatible absorber appears, do not petrify a relic you want to sell. Keep Petrify pointed outside the bag. If a crystal already exists, either find a valid absorber before leaving or accept that the crystal will be lost.

Final Backpack Audit

  • Check every Pointed arrow and every Back to Tresna trigger.
  • Remove Overcharged from anything that may be Shocked again.
  • Do not extract with unabsorbed Aetherium unless you accept losing it.
  • Compare the displayed Quality and value before and after each activation.
  • If a required relic does not appear, keep the safe layout. These combinations are run opportunities, not guaranteed drops or one universal best backpack.
