Stuck Quest, Loading Screen, and Save Troubleshooting

Update Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault before trying anything drastic, then work from a full restart toward file repair and reinstall. Do not edit or delete a save to fix a quest marker. Nothing turns a neatly packed relic haul into cursed merchandise faster than watching Will use the Pendant and ride a loading screen forever. Protect a healthy save first; then fix the smallest broken piece.

Patch baseline checked September 21, 2026: PC version 1.0 Hotfix 1, including Steam build 25197724; PS5 Hotfix 1; the mid-September Xbox Series X|S update; and Nintendo Switch 2 version 1.0.43.3. Xbox may show a different build label, so confirm that no game update remains available. Do not assume one platform's label or repair option applies to another.

Back Up a Healthy Save Before Reinstalling or Replacing Anything

Make this backup before a reinstall, rollback, file replacement, or cloud download. If the profile is already missing, older, or damaged, do not upload that local state over a healthier cloud copy. Compare timestamps first and keep every untouched backup until the repaired profile has survived several normal sessions.

  • PC Steam: Close the game and Steam. Press Windows Key + R, enter %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\11BitStudios\Moonlighter 2 The Endless Vault, and press Enter. Copy the entire folder to a separate local folder or external drive. Add the date to the copied folder name, then open the copy and confirm that it contains the same files as the original.
  • PC through the Xbox app: Connect to the Xbox network, let any synchronization prompt finish, return to the title screen, and fully quit the game and Xbox app. Do not apply the Steam save path or edit folders under Windows Packages. Use the Xbox app's repair tool only after synchronization has finished.
  • PlayStation 5: Close the game. With PlayStation Plus, open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Saved Data (PS5) > Upload or Delete from Console Storage > Upload to Cloud Storage. Upload only if the console copy is the healthy copy you want to keep. Without Plus, use Settings > System > System Software > Back Up and Restore > Back Up Your PS5. This is a full-console USB backup, not an individual-save copy, and restoring it later replaces the current console data.
  • Xbox Series X|S: Saves synchronize with the Xbox network and cannot be copied to USB as a separate save backup. While the profile is healthy, stay connected, return to the title screen, fully quit the game, and allow synchronization to finish. Never choose Delete everywhere. If progress is already missing, stop before launching or deleting data again.
  • Nintendo Switch 2: Moonlighter 2 supports Save Data Cloud, which requires Nintendo Switch Online. Highlight the game on the HOME Menu, press + or -, select Save Data Cloud, choose the correct user, then select Back Up Save Data. Check the console and cloud timestamps first. Downloading a cloud copy replaces the console save, and overwritten data cannot be recovered.

Safe test rule: Keep the dated PC folder untouched. On PS5, temporarily disable automatic synchronization for Moonlighter 2 after uploading the healthy copy. On Switch 2, temporarily turn off Automatic Save-Data Backup for the game after checking its timestamp. Xbox does not provide a separate dated cloud slot, so do not test a profile that already appears wrong; stop and contact support instead.

Weapon Mastery Points Outside Tresna or Anacard Is Missing

Affected platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Tested patch: PC 1.0 Hotfix 1; PS5 Hotfix 1; mid-September Xbox update; Switch 2 1.0.43.3. Visible symptom: Weapon Mastery says “Find Anacard in Tresna,” but its marker points outside the playable map or Anacard is absent. Last successful state: Tresna still loads and the objective appears in the quest log.

First identify the kind of blockage:

  • Intended prerequisite: If Weapon Mastery is not in the quest log, continue the Endless Vault objectives and Nou's conversations. That is not the misplaced-marker bug.
  • Confirmed progression blocker: If “Find Anacard in Tresna” is active and the marker points through a wall or beyond the map, install the listed patch for your platform. Hotfix 1 corrected the wrong Weapon Mastery marker.
  • Temporary marker or tracking problem: If the objective has already changed or Anacard is present but the old icon remains, retrack the quest and reload Tresna. Do not repeat a finished step just to please a stale icon.
  1. Fully close the game. On Xbox, remove it from Quick Resume before testing again.
  2. Check for a game update. On Switch 2, highlight the game, press +, then choose Software Update > Via the Internet. The current version should read 1.0.43.3.
  3. Launch the game, open the quest log, stop tracking Weapon Mastery, track another quest, then track Weapon Mastery again.
  4. Enter and leave the Moonlighter shop to reload Tresna. Anacard's normal search area is the southern to southeastern corner of town, southeast of Nou's Silent Exchange.
  5. On PC, verify the installation. In Steam use Library > Moonlighter 2 > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. In the Xbox app select the game, choose Manage > Files > Verify and Repair.
  6. If the marker is now correct but Anacard is still absent or the conversation will not advance, stop there and send the platform, installed version, current journal text, and last completed main objective to 11 bit studios support. The marker fix does not guarantee recovery from every separate quest-state problem.

The fix worked when Anacard appears, her conversation starts, and the journal advances from “Find Anacard in Tresna” to the Old Broom boss challenge. Wait for the save icon to clear, return to the title screen, and keep the backup. Avoid the old SaveData.bin edit in a general repair attempt; it bypasses quest flags instead of repairing the cause.

Endless Loading After the Pendant, a Door, or a Return to Tresna

Affected platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Tested patch: PC 1.0 Hotfix 1; PS5 Hotfix 1; mid-September Xbox update; Switch 2 1.0.43.3. Visible symptom: a transition lasts far longer than the game's normal load, the animation stops, or Tresna never appears. Last successful state: the tutorial, dungeon room, or shop was responsive immediately before the transition.

  1. If the loading animation still moves, give the first unusually long load a little extra time. Do not close the game while its save icon is visible.
  2. If nothing changes, close the game from the platform menu and restart the system. Reload the existing profile; do not create a replacement profile.
  3. Install the newest game and system update. Hotfix 1 specifically fixed a loading-screen freeze while returning to Tresna during the tutorial. Switch 2 version 1.0.43.3 also fixed several named infinite-loading cases involving the Greed Colosseum, the opening scene, a Howling Harbor Bloblet, a shop showcase, repeated shop upgrades, and one Houtu fall. These fixes do not promise that every Pendant or transition hang is gone.
  4. On PC, verify the installed files. On Switch 2, use System Settings > Data Management > Manage Software > Moonlighter 2 > Scan for Corrupted Data.
  5. On PC only, open the graphics settings and switch between DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. Apply the change and fully restart the game before testing. This selector is not available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Switch 2.
  6. If the same transition still fails, use the platform backup steps above, then reinstall only the game application. Do not delete saved data. Reinstall is the final bid in this merchant negotiation, not the opening offer.

Test with the smallest transition that reproduced the problem, such as entering and leaving the shop. Keep cloud auto-upload disabled during this first check where the platform allows it. Confirm that the expected quest stage, gold, equipment, and Tresna upgrades are still present before attempting a dungeon run or shop day. Repeat the transition twice; one clean load is encouraging, while two are a much better receipt.

Crashes During a Quest, Dungeon Transition, or Shop Exit

Affected platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Tested patch: PC 1.0 Hotfix 1; PS5 Hotfix 1; mid-September Xbox update; Switch 2 1.0.43.3. Visible symptom: the game closes to the desktop or console menu after a quest completes, while changing rooms, or while leaving the shop. Last successful state: Will was controllable immediately before the completion trigger or loading screen.

  1. Update first. Hotfix 1 fixed a crash after a certain main quest and a crash caused by one combination of Wound and Ignite perks.
  2. Fully restart the game and system. On Xbox, remove the game from Quick Resume before retesting.
  3. On PC, verify files, update the graphics driver, and test DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 one at a time. Restart between tests so the result is clear.
  4. If the platform cannot receive the current update yet, avoid combining Wound and Ignite perks for that run. This is a temporary workaround, not a repair.
  5. On Switch 2, scan the software for corrupted data. On any platform, reinstall only the game application after the healthy-save backup or synchronization steps have been completed.

Confirm the repair by repeating the same low-risk transition with the same profile. Then inspect the journal, gold, equipment, shop upgrades, and Tresna progress before starting another expedition or opening the shop. If anything is missing, quit at once and keep automatic cloud upload disabled where possible. Do not play forward and let a weaker save become the newest copy.

Save Is Missing, Older, or Will Not Load

Affected platforms: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Tested patch: the September 21 patch baseline above. Visible symptom: Continue is unavailable, the profile opens at an older point, or expected gold, gear, quests, and upgrades are missing. Last successful state: the previous session showed the expected profile and completed its save animation before closing.

  1. Do not start a new game in the affected slot. Do not delete local data to force a cloud download.
  2. If the local profile already looks wrong, do not upload it. Photograph or write down every local and cloud timestamp the platform displays.
  3. On PC Steam, copy the entire current save folder to a second dated backup even if the files appear damaged. Keep it separate from the last healthy backup.
  4. On PS5 or Switch 2, disable automatic save synchronization before opening the game. Download a cloud copy only when its timestamp and progress are more likely to match the last healthy session; the download overwrites the console copy.
  5. On Xbox, allow a synchronization conflict screen to finish loading before choosing anything. Choose a copy only after comparing the information shown. If no healthy choice is clear, cancel and contact support rather than guessing.
  6. Verify PC application files or scan Switch 2 software data. These checks target the installed game, not a manual replacement of the save.
  7. If the profile still fails, stop before any rollback or file replacement. Send the platform, installed version, last good quest or location, failure timing, and the PC save folder where applicable to 11 bit studios support.

A healthy recovery should show the expected quest stage, gold, equipment, shop upgrades, and Tresna progress. Check those items before entering a dungeon or running a shop day, since normal play can create another autosave. Once everything matches, return to the title screen normally, restore cloud synchronization, and keep the backup for several more sessions.
