General Overview and Tips

A lovely bolt of fabric can look endless until a full skirt eats the last inch. Start with the client’s brief. Check the required traits, any named trim, and the budget before you choose a design. Those needs guide the dress, but its shape and fabric still leave room for your own ideas.

Build the design in the sketchbook. Choose parts such as the bodice and skirt, then preview the draft before buying or cutting anything. Check the fabric estimate beneath it. Price enough cloth for the pieces you chose, and keep coin aside for required trim. If the brief asks for lace trim, filter the shop’s accessories for Lace Trim. Lace fabric or an item with “lace” in its name may not meet that requirement.

At the cutting table, lay out the largest pattern pieces first. A pattern piece is one shape you cut from the fabric and later join to the dress. Before you cut, check that the pieces fit and that the print lands where you want it. Preview the cut pieces on the mannequin before sewing, then compare the finished dress with the brief before delivery. That hazy client wish is starting to look like your idea.

If enough fabric would cost more than you can spare, return to the sketchbook and try a smaller skirt or a simpler design. Check the new fabric estimate before shopping again. Your coin purse can take a breath.
