How to Lay Out Patterns Without Wasting Fabric

That lovely wide skirt can eat the last of your commission coin before you have cloth for the bodice. In Dressmaker, check the fabric estimate beneath your sketchbook draft before buying. A pattern piece is one part of the dress you cut from the fabric roll. A larger piece needs more room; the roll’s width limits what fits side by side. The estimate is a starting point, since turning pieces can change how much length you use.

At the cutting table, place the largest pieces, often skirt panels, on the chosen fabric first. Rotate and move them before using the pattern-cutting scissors. Check that each whole outline stays on the cloth, then look at its grain direction. Grain means the direction of the fabric’s threads; a bias cut runs diagonally across them. That turn changes both the space a piece takes and how it looks on the finished dress. Leave room for the smaller bodice or sleeve pieces you still need.

1. Before the first cut: Inspect every large panel on the roll. If one only fits by turning it, decide whether that grain direction suits the dress you pictured for your client.
2. After each cut: Check the uncut pieces against the gaps still visible on the fabric. Try a small piece in a usable gap before reaching for fresh cloth.
3. Before trimming the roll or buying more: Use A and D to move through the fabric you have. Look for room farther along the roll, then check whether any earlier gap can hold a remaining piece. The roll-trimming scissors remove a section of cloth; they do a different job from cutting out a pattern piece.

If a large piece will not fit, pause the scissors and move the uncut pieces around it again. If the roll is too narrow for that piece at the grain direction you want, revisit the sketchbook draft and its fabric estimate before spending more coin. There is no single layout or fabric length for every dress. That is part of the fun: your choice of cloth and cut helps turn a client’s wish into a dress that feels like yours.
