Evidence, Mindmaps and Hypotheses Explained

You have the letter, you have a theory, and Declan still cannot form a hypothesis. The manor would like your paperwork in order. In The Seance of Blake Manor, finding evidence, inspecting its details and discussing it can be separate steps. Before chasing another guest down the corridor, check which step your current lead actually needs.

Finding a clue is only the start

Evidence is information Declan gathers through searches, observations and conversations. Keep these three actions separate:

  • Acquire it: Find the item or learn the information. This gives you something to investigate.
  • Inspect its details: Examine the relevant parts of a document or object. Having it in your records does not mean you have uncovered every useful detail.
  • Discuss it: Bring relevant information to a guest who may know more. Their response can provide a connection that the object alone cannot.

Private letters and suspicious testimony become useful together. Read what the evidence actually establishes, then ask who could explain the part you still do not understand.

Read the mindmap before filling the blanks

A mindmap is the visual web of clues and connections for a person or mystery. An open lead points toward something you can investigate further. In her Women-Led Games interview, lead developer Treasa McCabe explains that mindmaps organize clues found in different orders, leads help players choose what to pursue, and fill-in-the-blank hypotheses help them make sense of what they have learned.

Open the relevant mindmap and review the evidence connected to that mystery. Read the connections as well as the clue names. Then check its open leads: is there something left to inspect, a question to ask or a link you have not established?

When the game offers a hypothesis, you complete a deduction by choosing words or phrases to fill gaps in a statement. Match each choice to the evidence you have gathered. The aim is to explain how the clues fit together.

A deduction is not the finish line

A correct hypothesis establishes what Declan has worked out. Confronting a character is a separate step, and that conversation may reveal further tasks before their mystery is resolved. Follow the resulting lead rather than treating the accepted sentence as a completed case.

If the hypothesis remains unavailable, use Hypothesis Unavailable? What to Check Next. Start with the relevant mindmap lead, inspect acquired evidence, then revisit the matching discussion and any unfinished follow-up choice. An already-discussed topic can still deserve another look. Check the displayed action cost before starting another charged interaction, then return to the mindmap to see whether anything changed.
