Rusty Bars, Roots, Goo and Webs: Which Tool Works?

You’ve found a rusty fence, brought a War Hammer, and achieved absolutely nothing. Deep Dish Dungeon makes that distinction count: rusty fences need the tool named Hammer. The War Hammer does not break them. Before spending another trip swinging at the same barrier, match it to the right tool below.

ObstacleWhat works
Rusty metal fence or rusty barsHammer
Roots blocking a passageAxe or Great Axe
Goo pilePickaxe
Rock pileExplosives
Spider webLit Torch

Not every set of bars is a breakable fence. The prison’s fixed iron bars have separate key requirements. A door that says it is jammed is another kind of blocker, too. Neither becomes a Hammer job just because it refuses to open.

If the barrier will not budge

  1. Identify the obstacle. Compare it with the table. Read any door message before treating a barred entrance as a rusty fence.
  2. Check what is equipped. For rusty fences, equip Hammer, not War Hammer. For webs, hold a Torch that is actually lit.
  3. Record the return trip. If the needed tool is missing, stop testing your whole inventory. Write down the nearest room feature, which entrance you used, and whether you climbed or descended to reach the blockage. Add the required tool to that note.

That little note turns “some roots somewhere downstairs” into your next expedition’s target. Bring the matching tool when you return, and a familiar dead end can become a useful connection.

Check the dated crafting changes first

Steam patch 1.0.51.0, released October 23, 2026, added a Pickaxe recipe at the Workbench crafting station and reduced the Hammer recipe’s Iron Rod cost by one. Check your recipe panel for the full costs before gathering materials. Older instructions saying the Pickaxe cannot be crafted are outdated for that Steam version. See Version Check, Platforms and Co-op Basics before following an older Hammer or Pickaxe instruction; Steam patch numbers do not establish Xbox update status.
