Why Is Passive Income So Low?

You squeezed another book box into the last gap in storage, then your managed shop sent back a payment that barely looks worth the shelf space. Before blaming the manager in Bookshop Simulator, check what you are comparing. A busy till shows sales. It does not show how much money survives the costs.

Separate sales, profit, and your payment

Gross sales means money customers spend before expenses. Profit is what remains after costs. Passive income is the payment you receive from a managed shop while you work at another location. These are different figures; your active shop's takings do not transfer directly into a matching passive payment.

The managed simulation replenishes sold stock and pays applicable bills. Replacing those books costs money, even when you are elsewhere and never carry the boxes yourself.

Qualitative comparison dated October 19, 2026; illustrative and untested in-game.
FigureWhat it means
SalesMoney taken from customers before costs.
Replacement stock costsMoney spent replacing items sold in the simulation.
BillsApplicable shop expenses paid by the simulation.
Remaining profitMoney left after costs, rather than the full sales total.
Passive paymentThe amount sent to you. Do not assume it equals gross sales or all remaining profit.

Compare the same shop over matching hours

  1. Check your benchmark. If you are comparing passive income with sales from a day you ran that shop yourself, account for replacement stock and bills first.
  2. Match the in-game window. Compare the same shop over matching hours. One remote hour against a full day behind the register tells you very little.
  3. Track the purple receipts. Since update 0.13, remote payments arrive hourly. At each in-game hour boundary, the simulation covers the preceding hour for locations other than your current one. The purple currency indicator shows the payment from each remote shop.
  4. Check the day-end passive-income total. This summarizes those payments for the day. Neither the hourly receipts nor that total represents the managed shop's gross sales.

If no receipt appears, recheck that the remote shop has its own hired manager and Manager Desk, then stay at another location through an in-game hour boundary. Low income alone does not prove the manager is broken. Get a fair comparison before changing the shop—you want time to build that lovely reading corner, with a clear idea of what is funding it.
