Challenge Mode and Co-op: What Changes?
A shopper passes up your carefully priced books, and suddenly the cozy reading nook feels like a very expensive waiting room. Before blaming your manager's income, check your mode and party size. In Bookshop Simulator, another shop's results only make a useful comparison when the conditions match.
This section covers Windows PC as of October 19, 2026, with September update 1.1 and patch 1.1.1258 as the build context.
Allow for Challenge mode's tougher sales conditions
Challenge mode reduces customer traffic and lowers shoppers' tolerance for high markups—prices raised above an item's base price. If customers reject prices that seemed fine in a standard run, check the mode before using those prices as your benchmark. A quieter shop or disappointing payment alone does not prove the manager setup is broken.
Check unlock requirements for your co-op party
Version 1.0 launched on July 20, 2026, with Steam co-op for up to four players. Party size changes some employee and shop-fixture unlock requirements. A solo unlock level is therefore not a universal requirement for setting up a managed shop.
- If an employee or fixture is still locked, check the requirement in your current game before chasing a solo level target.
- Compare income only after checking the mode and number of players in both runs.
- Use matching in-game observation windows. One hourly payment and a full day's total are different measures.
Get those checks straight, then return to building the bookshop you would happily lose an afternoon browsing.
