Many levels require the use of a boat. This may be common sense for some; however, it took me a while of playing before I figured this out. You can pretty much doc the boat anywhere, so you don't have to return it to the port. Instead of paying to rent a boat everytime you need it to fulfill a mission, rent one at the begining of the game and keep it on the shore of your castle. Helps with the lack of money available in this game.
