Remember that the graphics are in a kind of 3D so they slant. This 'effect' can hide coins and gems especially at the edges so, even though you have cleared the screen, there could be a coin or gem hidden by the unmoveable graphics. Make sure you run your cursor over all the edges and corners as I found some missing coins that way.

For the record - all the gems are in the game and collecting them boosts the power of the power-ups. You don't need them to find any hidden levels.

If there are 2 exits on a level make sure a new icon appears on the map. If you went out the wrong exit the icon will be grey meaning you should redo the level and take the other exit to open it up.

There seem to be only 299 coins in the game no matter how many times you play it which rather spoils it.
