Amaranthene - Journey of Torment

In the Reliquary segment - last. When trying to use the shard on the "strange Orb" - I cannot seem to solve the second section on the mine game?

I've followed both the built in guide ( completely wrong)! and the one provided here. This one to is not working?
It seems that each "pie shape" has two sections - both an inner and an outer. None of these instructions tell you which one to hit. For instance: This guide states, start with section "F" - well is that the inner or outer section? I've tried to hit in-between and every other conceivable way to go about it and none seem to work?
