Bonus Level Ending

Mystery of the Ancients Curse of Black Water - I can't finish the bonus level - I have the water sprite (element?) after rescuing the baby and getting it back to its mother. Guide says back out twice, the sprite (element) will disappear from my inventory and congratulations, game over. Except when I back out twice, nothing happens, inventory still has sprite (element) and therefore NO game over, no final cut scenes. HELP what am I doing wrong?
